Shed for Mac puts your whole shed in the Finder, shows in the menu bar what it is doing, and puts drives and camera cards into the shed straight from the drive. Download it from shed.work; it needs macOS 13 or later, and it keeps itself up to date.
Open the app and press Sign in. It opens your browser, where you sign in with Microsoft or Google as usual, and the app connects itself. If you would rather use a code, choose Use a code instead, then in the portal open Settings, then Account, press Connect another Mac, and type the code it shows.
Once it is connected, your shed appears in the Finder's sidebar under Locations, named after your company. Browsing it downloads nothing; opening a file fetches just that file. Copy files in, rename, move and make folders as you would anywhere else, and each change goes to the shed. Deleting puts things in the shed's bin, where they can be put back.
The first time, macOS may ask you to switch Shed on. The menu bar says so and has an Open System Settings button; switch on Shed under File Providers and it appears. To show only some of the shed's top folders, untick the others in Settings.
For anything big, use Ingest rather than dragging it into the Finder: the Finder copies everything onto your Mac first, and Ingest copies nothing to your Mac at all. Plug in the drive or card and Shed offers to put it in the shed, or choose File, then Ingest a Drive.
While it runs, the menu bar shows how far along it is, and Shed keeps your Mac awake until it is done. If the drive is unplugged, it waits, says so, and carries on from the same file when you plug it back in, even days later. Files already in the shed are not sent again.
When the shed has checked the last file, Shed says Every file has a checked copy in the shed, and emails you a log of every file: where it was on the drive, where it is now, its size, its fingerprint and when it was checked. Shed never changes or deletes anything on the drive.
Drop files or folders on Shed in the Dock, right-click them in the Finder and choose Add to Shed, or choose File, then Add Files or Folders. Choose where they land, making a new folder if you need one. A file the shed already holds shows as Already there and is not sent again; a file of the same name with different contents shows as Different, with Replace and Skip, so you decide.
Click the Shed mark in the menu bar to see where things stand.
Under Lately is what you have sent, opened, moved and renamed. See all opens the Activity window (Window, then Activity), with ninety days of what Shed did on this Mac, a search and filters. If we ever ask for details, Copy details for support puts everything we need on the clipboard to paste into an email.
Whole pieces already sent are kept, so a pause, a sleep, a dropped connection or quitting the app costs nothing: it carries on with what is left. In Settings you can set a speed limit, so a big transfer does not take the whole office's connection, and choose outside office hours only, which holds uploads until the evening and carries on by itself. The default hours are 09:00 to 17:30 on weekdays, and weekends are always free.
Download level or above to browse and open the shed in the Finder, and Change level or above to put things in, rename, move or delete. See Invite someone and choose what they can do.
Tell us which libraries or drives are full and roughly how large they are. We size a shed, set up the first sweep with you, and most are running within a week.
